WTF?!?

If you're not watching the live CodeCon stream, you just missed [livejournal.com profile] zooko hack a laptop to pieces with [livejournal.com profile] yoctohedron's axe.

Yes, really. It was a little bit hard to tell exactly what happened in the 320x240 window, and the sound was off, but apparently [livejournal.com profile] zooko now owes [livejournal.com profile] yoctohedron a new axe.

I think this might actually beat out "isolating DNA with common household items" as most surprising CodeCon demo ever. I note also that [livejournal.com profile] yoctohedron had a support role in both...

I'm slightly acquainted with Zooko. At last week's Boulder LUG he announced he was going to destroy a laptop to demonstrate the Tahoe file system.

I couldn't help thinking... Oh I hope it wasn't a mac :-)

interesting demo with an axe. The axe fails and is not redundant, but the failure mode is a graceful degradation, as the handle may still be used for destruction using the same api. The data was recoverable.

some of the laptop parts escaped the stage. But it's safer than plastic explosive, i guess...

I hope the video is posted later!

Because I didn't have the stream up at the time.

I hear the first swing missed the laptop and left the axe head embedded in the stage off of the handle. ;)

So the stream works for you? I wonder why it doesn’t work for me or [livejournal.com profile] node. What software are you using?

You can't top a presentation that starts out with "Those of you in the first three rows might get wet" and really mean it.
