Oh, so you're just another 1984-style fascist. Right, don't need any more of those in my life than I had two days ago. Unfollowed, and good riddance. I have other sources for link aggregation that are much kinder to my blood pressure.

Intellectually I knew that, but it's just so disheartening to run up against in real life. I'd feel pretty lonely if it weren't for the folks here to remind me that I'm not the only anti-authoritarian left.

Ignoring his rather biased description of gun enthusiasts, he's probably sadly right. I disagree that people who show up at rallies openly carrying should be on such lists, but they are likely to be so.
From: [identity profile] mouser.livejournal.com
It's worse - those that are on the fence about gun control will look at people (who are doing this legally, I might add) get nervous and vote for more restrictive gun regulations.

I'm a strong believer that they have the right to bear arms. But BOY is this going to be spun in ways they're going to hate.

"Strong men don't move to the middle, strong men move the middle."

They know exactly what they're doing, and are outrageous precisely because they know it gives more moderate groups something to triangulate against. By staking out an extreme position, they automatically shift the position of anyone who assumes that the truth must lie smack in the middle of any two opposing sides. I think that's a stupid assumption, personally, but I'm not opposed to using other people's assumptions against them to get what I want.

Coincidentally enough, it was Ernest Hancock who told me there were two ways to respond to this:

  1. Try to go unnoticed and stay off all the possible lists they could create.
  2. Be so loud and obnoxious that if they ever decided to do more than put you on a list, everyone would notice you were gone.

Ever since then, I find these sorts of threats rather amusing. You're gonna' put me on a list? Martin Luther King was on a list. Pretty much anyone who ever accomplished anything politically has been on a list. For political activists, it's almost shameful not to be on a list!

Cypherpunks! I would like to make a humble request for a verse with a shout-out to PGP and the Clipper Chip "...and now I'm on a list!"

War protesters need a verse of their own too. Hell, it could go all the way back to J. Edgar. Lots of lists out there.

Not all of us have the right to own a gun. I, for example, do not. If I did have the right and felt comfortable owning one, however, I don't think I would brandish it at a protest rally.

The reasons for owning a gun, IMO, do no include using the implied force of arms as a means of communicating one's dislike for political policy. I prefer a ballot to a bullet in these cases.

However, I would defend the right of others to do what I feel is unreasonable, because I want those same people to defend my rights when they find them unpleasant.

Sorry... there are varying definitions and I wasn't being specific enough. Let me rephrase using the definition I wanted:

2 : to exhibit in an ostentatious or aggressive manner

"...I don't think I would exhibit it in an ostentatious manner at a protest rally."

I hope that clears that part up.

Fair enough. Keep in mind, though, that "brandishing" is a (legal) term of art in firearms discussions. Though the precise definition varies by state, in a gun thread, it will always be interpreted as meaning something along the lines of "illegally threaten with".

Exactly. Hell, I've argued in the last few days that it would be wrong and dangerous for the government to take Bill O'Reilly or Glenn Beck off the air, because I don't want a hypothetical future ultra-right-wing government having any increased ability to take ultra-liberals off the air.

With regards to gun owners in the USA - if the quoted speaker thinks that we aren't "on a list" already, I submit that he or she is not paying much attention to the record keeping requirements upon FFLs or to the existence of the NICS audit logs.

Until they ban what you own. And then raid your house to find them.

Don't say it doesn't happen in America. It has: http://commanderzero.com/?p=693#more-693

To make a long story short: Mr Zero buys guns in NYC. Guns are registered and listed. Mr Zero moves to Montana. NYC bans Mr Zero's guns, sends him a letter telling him to turn them in. Mr Zero responds "Bite me". NYC cops raid his house... which he no longer occupied.

Granted, Mr Zero could have written back "I moved" instead... but the story is more amusing this way.
