Moths got into my knitting box and ate everything.

All my handmade socks, all my handmade gloves (minus the chording glove), the lace shawl I was making for my mom -- all of it, gone. (I suspect that for a knitter there is not much more horrifying than picking up a piece made from 2-ply yarn and watching it disintegrate in your hands.)

The only pieces of my own knitting left intact are my winter hat, which was in the pocket of my winter coat, and the baby alpaca slipper-socks I knitted for [livejournal.com profile] enochsmiles, which he takes with him whenever he travels. The first thing I ever knitted -- a chunky Dr. Who-style scarf that I made under the tutelage of [livejournal.com profile] meowmeowcatchow -- might have survived, as it wasn't in the box and I haven't found it yet, but I have a bad feeling about this.

Nothing to do but start over, I guess.

I'm sorry, I know it means nothing but I'm sorry.

total suckage. I'm sorry, but at least those moths had good taste in knitted goods.

What blows my mind is that they ignored things like gauge swatches, but ate the fuck out of things like the boot socks that took months to make and were completely finished except for mattress-seaming the toes. And that shawl ... I could scream. I'm never going to find handmade Norwegian sapphire-blue silk-merino two-ply yarn again -- it and its burgundy twin brother (not yet made into anything, but also eaten) were a lucky find at an arts-and-crafts fair two years ago.

I wonder if there is something in skin oils that makes the yarn taste better to the moths... Odd that they would go for the socks and gloves but not swatches.

You wont find those yarns again, but you'll find something cool. I promise.

Owwww. That sucks.

I highly recommend storing yarn and knit things with either cedar chips or chunks of cedarwood.

Yeah, lesson learned. This has never happened before, I have no idea how they got in, but I'm definitely going to find a source for cedar chips. (Actually I think I saw some in the housewares store I ducked into earlier today to get out of the rain, so I should go back there Monday.)

AUGH! How frustrating and upsetting.

Wishing you lots of pretty, pretty yarn to play with going forward.

All insects are accursed.

Sorry to hear about the untimely demise of your oeuvres. :-(

Oh, God. I'm sorry. I knit loads but I've never tackled lace weight yet; I can only imagine how much work must have gone into that. Damn moths.

My heart absolutely breaks for you. That's really awful, and I'm sorry. *huge hugs from a stranger on the internets*

I'm going to go locate cedar for my knitting bins immediately. I've currently got lavender guarding my stuff, but I want extra firewalls.

*whimper*
