Whoda thunk?
Dec. 6th, 2001 10:15 pmBy a bizarre freak of circumstance, I don't need a job next semester after all!
During today's Language and Society lecture, Dannye (one of the other TAs) leaned over and asked "You're TAing for Language and Gender next semester, right?" This was perplexing, because I'd already met with Rosemary, the prof for the spring Language and Society lecture, and decided which L&S section I'd take. "Check with Barb," she suggested, so after class, I did.
"Check your box," said Barb. So I did, and discovered a letter from Cathie offering me a second quarter-time appointment for the spring! This doubles my stipend and doesn't reduce my financial aid, so suddenly everything is looking straight up.
Of course, nothing is ever as easy as it looks at first; Language and Gender is scheduled at the exact same time as the Intro to Phonology class that I'm required to take. I still get the half-time appointment, though; it's just going to be for another class. Right now it looks like I'll either get another section of Language and Society (if someone can give me a 2:30-3:20 section on Monday or Wednesday), or I'll be the sole TA for Intro to Linguistics. There are ups and downs to both; taking on another L&S section means more on-stage time, whereas I can just sit down and listen to Alice lecture in Intro. But Intro will mean another class worth of stuff to grade.
Decisions, decisions, and none of 'em are mine to make, so it doesn't really matter :)
My clever plan for putting aside some actual savings is this: I'm tithing to myself. 10% of every paycheck goes into the savings account, and does not come out. (I haven't decided whether this counts for financial aid disbursements, though the responsible thing would be to do that.) This new windfall serves to move things along even faster -- I just did the math, and if I can sock away $140 out of each teaching paycheck, $120 out of each month of active duty pay and $300 out of each disbursement between now and August 2003, I'll have about $3500 put aside, and that's not counting interest. With no difficulty whatsoever in paying my car note, insurance, rent or bills, either.
Can it be? Is my life actually in order?
