I had to look up the Brown tagset today, and found it here. I still had the page open while I was writing an email, and the compose window covered up the left half of the page, so that all I could see were the example words on the right-hand side of the page. It occurred to me that they read like a sort of Dadaist poetry:

quite, rather
half, all
both
many, several, next
a, the, no

and, or
one, two, 2, etc.
if, although

this, that
some, any
these, those
either

chief, top
biggest
can, should, will

home, today, west

first, 2nd
everybody, nothing

my, our
mine, ours
myself
ourselves
me, him, it, them
he, she, it, one
I, we, they, you
very, fairly
enough, indeed

here then, indoors
about, off, up

what, which
whose
whom, which, that
who, which, that
how
how, where, when

(Look, I didn't say it read like good poetry; I said it read like Dadaist poetry.)

If one were to combine equal parts the Cure and the White Stripes, add a dash of Blink 182 and perhaps a tiny sprinkling of classical influence (I swear I heard a riff on Beethoven's 9th in there), the end result would sound something very much like The Killers' debut album Hot Fuss. They're not the most cerebral band I've ever heard, but if you like bands for whom rhythm and meter Mean Something, whose lyrics twist and whip around densely (but not too-densely) layered instrumentation like the cars on the Texas Cyclone, you could do one hell of a lot worse than these guys.

Current favourite songs off album: "Mr. Brightside" (quoted in title) and "Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine".
