It's sunny and bright outside, so much so that from indoors, it looks warm. It is in fact nothing of the sort, but if today were about a month from now, you'd see me sitting on the lawn outside MacLean, working on the homework I need to do.

Not much beats a day that ends early, especially when it's been a busy but productive thirty-six hours or so. Last night, cryptogeekboy and I finished the third draft of the paper that I was doing all the SQL-grammar research for. I also proved a lemma which turned out to be instrumental in the central argument. Go me! It's now in the hands of some very clever people who have volunteered to vet it, and I'm really looking forward to their responses.

The SQL research has proven doubly useful, because my advisor has asked me to add some functionality to a tool that one of his other students is writing. We had a short meeting about that today, and let me just say that it's very nice when people ask you to do something that they think is difficult, and which really is going to require about half an hour's worth of actual coding once I get into the groove. Even if it is in Java. </sigh>

I also have new running shoes now, because despite having been very good running shoes, the old ones are starting to come apart. There's a store in Coralville, Running Wild, which deals solely in running shoes and equipment, so I stopped in to see what there was to see. One of the first things that caught my eye was a small, hand-lettered sign explaining that they didn't sell Nike Shox shoes because one of Nike's other sub-brands was a much better running shoe. The owner had me take my boots off and walk back and forth so he could see how my feet hit the ground, then had me try on a few different pairs of shoes. My feet tend to pronate inward, so it took a few go-rounds before I found one that felt like it gave enough support. "I'll take them," I said, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that they were only about $75. "The right shoe doesn't have to be an expensive one," the owner replied, and I brought the shoes home. They will definitely get my business in the future.

Tonight: homework, more on my sweater, and probably watching some more of MacGyver season 1.
