Where I am from (Sweden), that can be done, by making sure that your friend has a signed piece of paper (witnessed by a 3rd party, ideally a Public Notary, but anyone who can sign, write their name legibly and provide contact information for a verification should, in theory, do), stating that what powers of attourney they give you.
I believe, but cannot prove, that the same is the cause in Britain.
This solution, of course, requires that you've prepared things in advance and that your friend keeps enough wits about themselves to be able to produce said paperwork.
As for the legailty, I have both written and executed similar powers of attourney/ombudsmanship and the only time it was a problem was when the paperwork was done in pencil (handwritten, with a pen, no probs; handwritten, with a pencil, no end of problems).
