Yeah, I keep oxygen absorber packets (saved from food, medicine bottles, whatever) on hand for exactly this reason. One of my early experiments involved plating yogurt bacteria and placing them in different atmospheric environments -- open air, partial-vacuum, and CO2 -- and the CO2 worked best, so it's what I've been working with so far, but there are certainly situations where oxygen absorption is the best tool.
