I spent three years in the bioinformatics group at Integrated DNA Technologies, working with some really sharp folks -- some of them are biologists by training, some are computer scientists. My old boss there is a population geneticist, and we still talk every couple of weeks; he's been a huge help. I also tap [livejournal.com profile] spider88 and [livejournal.com profile] feralnerd, both working biologists, for advice, and am always happy to have other folks to hit up with questions.

Many of the DIYbio folks have biology degrees as well, I just happen not to.
