I spent three years in the bioinformatics group at Integrated DNA Technologies, working with some really sharp folks -- some of them are biologists by training, some are computer scientists. My old boss there is a population geneticist, and we still talk every couple of weeks; he's been a huge help. I also tap spider88 and feralnerd, both working biologists, for advice, and am always happy to have other folks to hit up with questions.

Many of the DIYbio folks have biology degrees as well, I just happen not to.
