I opened my email this morning and discovered, much to my delight, an invitation into the final group of beta-testers for City of Heroes! (Cue much cheering and shouting. For those of you who know just how few computer games I actually play, the significance of this excitement should be readily apparent.) Unfortunately, it turns out that the minimum graphics card they support is a Radeon 8500-series, and I am still packing a pitiful 7000-series. Mope.

So, I turn to you, my friends list. I can pick up a 9200-series at the Local Hardware Shop for $62, or a 9200-series for $160 or thereabouts. Bearing in mind that I really don't do much in the way of gaming (as in, I haven't purchased a computer game in at least seven years, and the only one I've pirated[1] in all that time was Enter the Matrix, which I never ended up actually playing), is CoH worth it?

[1] I pirate other stuff, like MP3s.

I have heard that it is a neat idea, but the character classes are somewhat clunky (unbalanced). Then again, this is the beta, so maybe they can fix it with help. The graphics and customization options are supposed to be good, just think what you could do with them.

But honestly, don't you have that creeping techno-lust to get the newer more powerful video card ANYWAY?

I've been a beta tester of CoH for a while now, and I've tried almost all of the character classes, and they're not unbalanced at all. The different classes just fit different styles of play. It just takes a bit to find the right tactics to use with a given class and power set. That's part of the fun, and one of the reasons why none of my beta characters got to a very high level. As soon as I figured out how to play one well, I'd start a new one.

I upgraded to a ATI 9600 XT right before I got into beta, and it's been great. 20-30 fps with full detail turned on, 1280x1024/32. Just be sure to use Driver Cleaner 3 when installing new drivers.

I do, but then I was also kinda planning on picking up a new hard drive, since I'm kinda light on the storage right now, and then a new laptop hard drive, since I'm splitting a 20GB between Win2K and Linux. Double mope.

I have read some good things about it. [livejournal.com profile] gamera_spinning posted this link to a review (http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=441126#441126) that might help you some.

One of the OWW chatroom people is a CoH beta-tester, though I'm not sure I remember which one. (Leah? Possibly? But I could be making that up.) Jeremy might know. Or you could bop in there and ask.

Leah is betatesting it. I never signed up. She seems to like it. I've been reading a ton of reviews on it, and it sounds like a winner. Not as big of a winner as Worlds of Warcraft, mind you...

Woo!

Yup, Roupen and I have been on the beta since day one, and we're having a great time with it (perhaps too great; my wordcount is suffering). Drop me an IM and let me know what your character name is: we'll induct you into our Supergroup O' Doom. :)
