Rabbits!

I seem to have become the temporary owner of a rabbit.

Last night was [livejournal.com profile] saoirse_kore's last night in town; she's packed up all her toys and moved on out to Cedar Falls, and all my best wishes go with her and Mike, who's definitely as cool as she described him to be. Her going-away dinner was quiet, but terrific fun all the same -- I got to renew my acquaintance with Alicia, one of the Cornell Chess and Games people I surely would have gotten on fantastically with had I done my undergrad there, and met Naomi and Erin, the former a sysadmin in one of the buildings near mine, the latter a bookbinding student. (What? You've never heard of the Center for the Book? Shame on you.)

During dinner it came out that [livejournal.com profile] saoirse_kore wouldn't be able to take her rabbit, Pocky, with her to Cedar Falls, because there just isn't enough room in their apartment. They had plans to call a bunny-rescue place, but between one thing and another, it hadn't happened yet, so Pocky had nowhere to stay. I figured, what's one mammal more? -- it certainly reduces the mammal:computer ratio around here -- so I volunteered to bunny-sit for a few days.

Thus, enter Pocky, who is brown and white and lop-eared and terribly, terribly cute. Currently he resides in a wire kennel in my room, though I'm supposed to let him out at night to hop around. (And I will, though I need to figure out where. Apparently he has a penchant for chewing on cords and books; those of you who have seen my room are no doubt stuffing your fists in your mouths laughing at the idea of a cord- and book-free Meredith's room.) The cats don't have the faintest idea what to make of him; Odin's sitting on the bed next to me, just staring at the cage, and gets really startled anytime anyone pets him, while Bounce sits in the doorway in the "I am a cat with no legs" pose, also staring. They've met rabbits before, during the month or two I stayed at my parents' place after Leo and I split up, but I think they were too afraid of my parents' cats to remember. Of course, Pocky probably outweighs Bounce by a good two pounds. I'd be nervous too, if I were her.

So, um, if anyone happens to want a rabbit, I'm sure [livejournal.com profile] saoirse_kore would really appreciate Pocky going to a loving home, and while he's been a lovely houseguest so far, I really cannot take care of a rabbit long-term, much as I would like to.

Anyway, off to Aphelion with me and Alicia. Have a lovely evening, LiveJournal.

Excuse me because it's late and I am in a whimsical mood, but . . .

They taste a lot like chicken. :)

*snort*

I have actually had rabbit before, but it was so long ago that I don't really recall. I seem to remember it being a bit like veal in texture, but not in taste.

Actually, the chicken comment is pretty accurate, particularly dark meat. It's almost like quail.

Heh, I've been trying to convince [livejournal.com profile] tall_man that a bunny would be a better pet option than a bearded skink.

I seem to recall rabbit being /much/ gamier than chicken - more along the lines of grouse or quail. I actually prefer chicken (and not just because chickens are annoying while rabbits actually /have/ personalities and tend to be rather sociable), which is good 'cause it tends to be more available and cheaper.

awww! How cute! I wish I could bring the bunny here, but I think they frown on sending live animals via UPS.

Where is "here" right now, anyway? I never can keep track of where you are.

way, way late with this....

I'm in Texas, actually. Ft Worth to be specific. Staying with Dorothy and her family. This will now be known as my permanent home. no more travelling for me! Well, except to Iowa for a few weeks to hang with you and Sarah. My goal from now on is to be able to go visit people for extended amounts of time even while living here. We'll see how well that works out.
