Perseids last night were a bit of a wash, thanks to heavy altocumulus ("mackerel scales") cloud cover. I drove out to the middle of nowhere, somewhere near Muscatine, and sat on the hood of my car, listening to the cicadas, crickets and cows. All told I think I saw about three meteors in three hours, although the ones I did see were spectacularly bright. (They had to be, to show up through the clouds.) But at least I got to see one good meteor shower this year -- the Alpha Centaurids, which [livejournal.com profile] yoctohedron and I stopped to watch in the Mojave Desert on the way back from Defcon.

It's been a low-key weekend so far. I have cleaned out the freezer and may try tackling the living-room carpet, which is badly in need of a steam cleaning, tonight or tomorrow. Also, [livejournal.com profile] meowmeowcatchow has taught me how to knit in the round, which I have already begun to put to use toward the end of making fuzzy purple socks. Other than that, the weekend holds lots of debugging and tracing code paths through Postgres. Maybe going to see one of those movies I missed over the rest of the summer. We'll see.
