/me finds herself vaguely amused at the way that social negotiations among her peer group usually have a sort of SYN/SYN ACK/ACK flavour to them.

I explain FIN WAIT hangup issues to my class in terms of teenagers on the telephone

"Goodbye.... I'm going now."

"You're putting the phone down then."

"Yes, goodbye."

"Goodbye, have you put the phone down."

"No, you first."

etc etc.

Having no idea what you said, it reads to me like this.

Person one, proffering sin: Sin?
Person two: Sin? ACK!
Person one: Ack! (flees stage left)

[laugh] The SYN actually stands for SYNchronize. In the real world, I've noticed that a lot of conversations with friends, particularly on difficult subjects, do this weird little dance of "Here's something I'm upset about. Are we on the same page or am I missing something?" "I hear what you are saying; here is additional information and my take." "Ah, okay." [either further negotiation continues or everything's cool]

[livejournal.com profile] steer's comment about FIN WAIT (which is sort of a degenerate case of a normal TCP session termination, which usually goes ACK FIN/ACK/ACK FIN/ACK) is also particularly funny. :)
