/me finds herself vaguely amused at the way that social negotiations among her peer group usually have a sort of SYN/SYN ACK/ACK flavour to them.

[laugh] The SYN actually stands for SYNchronize. In the real world, I've noticed that a lot of conversations with friends, particularly on difficult subjects, do this weird little dance of "Here's something I'm upset about. Are we on the same page or am I missing something?" "I hear what you are saying; here is additional information and my take." "Ah, okay." [either further negotiation continues or everything's cool]

[livejournal.com profile] steer's comment about FIN WAIT (which is sort of a degenerate case of a normal TCP session termination, which usually goes ACK FIN/ACK/ACK FIN/ACK) is also particularly funny. :)
