A quick intermission, with previews of coming attractions

I'll get back to First, We Take Las Vegas once I've finished some more of this select-by-example code, but the machinima link reminded me of something wonderful and terrible that mycroftxxx and I ran across last night: the YATTA! video as recreated on Star Wars: Galaxies.

Game over. They fucking win. I am especially enchanted by the rendition of the Surechigai-zama hohoemi kureta... bit. You'll just have to see it.

Also, sometime soon I need to post some ideas that have been circling for the last couple of weeks, particularly What The Hell I Mean By "Select by Example" Anyway and Several Problems With Anonymity. I'm also thinking about putting together an abstract for an O'Reilly Emerging Tech presentation, and may start soliciting use-case ideas. Or at least rabbiting on about the ones I've already had.

Is that Meredith Patterson like went to UH Honors College Meredith Patterson, always wore a brown stetson (or some sort of high crowned man's hat), played White Wolf with John H. et al in one of the Honors College Dorms (I think Law), and took Marty's Poetry forms class? She was a CRAZY avid Randroid?

Is she going to some place called UI and getting a 2nd undergraduate??? Why is she packing uniforms to go to the West Coast?

UI == the University of Iowa. I came here four years ago to get a master's in linguistics, finished that, and now I'm working on a PhD in computer science.

Why is she packing uniforms to go to the West Coast?

Because I'm also in the National Guard, and was at Ft. Lewis for a month of training before being commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant.

And in the national guard?? Good for you! How do you like it so far? I don't know if you remember me. I was a non-traditional student in Honors College, dated John H., who gamed with you guys. I'd been in the Air Force before I went to college.

You and I were in Marty what's his name's Poetry forms class together. You were MUCH better at forms.

I was often snide and pretentious.

And I'm sorry if "randroid" came off as snide. I didn't mean to be THAT snide, only slightly, cutely arch.

How do you like it so far?

It's been okay. I was enlisted as an MP for several years, then got into ROTC when I went back to school and transferred to the Signal Corps. I haven't been an officer long enough to really know what that's like.

I don't, actually. Please don't take offence to that, though; I don't remember most of the people I went to UH with.

John Harp? Six-and-a-half-foot-tall John? If so, I'm guessing this was after I'd already left town (August 2000); he and I had dated all through high school and some in college as well.

I don't take offense. I was non-traditional so I kept a lowish profile. I was a year or two, maybe more, behind you classwise. We had a lot of mutual acquaintances so it might have been easier for me to take note of you (especially given that hat) than vice versa.

I can tell you we once had the beginnings of a discussion about obbjectivism vs post-structuralism on the steps/portico of the building where we took our forms class.

And it sounds like you've had a lot more happen between your UH years and the present. After all, I'm older and slower........
I've probably had a lot more time to reminisce and I'm approaching my forties which means nostalgia time for me...

Anyway, it sounds like you've had a few years chock full of interesting experiences. Where were you stationed as an MP?

Kelly Nine, long strawberry blond hair, mid-twentyish man with ratty goatee and mustache. Very very big fan of the band Yes, along with prog-rock in general.

I wasn't, actually. I enlisted in the Reserve about a month after 9/11, so I drilled with a unit in Davenport, IA, but never went anywhere interesting. I haven't been anywhere interesting with my new unit either, and now it's starting to look like I'll be moving to San Francisco in a few months anyway. Life resolutely refuses to settle down.

I gather, then, that you've finished the undergrad stuff and are doing grad work of your own?
