Today's dear brain, what the hell? moment: realising that the verses of Tom Lehrer's Alma can be sung to the tune of Take This Waltz by Leonard Cohen. (Not the chorus, just the verses. But still. 3/4 time, you're a slut.)
Everything ever written in ballad meter is just ripe for tune-matching. If I hear one more person explain how Emily Dickinson can be sung to "Yellow Rose of Texas" I'm going to flip over a table.
It gets worse: I've had the Cohen song stuck in my head for the last day or so, but with the words "fascist regime" inserted at metrically appropriate points (usually in the place of "dead magazine"). The Sex Pistols and Leonard Cohen do not need to be mashed up. No, they really don't. I insist.
The other day my brain decided that a mash up of the chorus of "Bust a Move" with the words "Doctor Who" substituted for "bust a move" was a really good idea. argghgghhhhhhh (where the heck in my subconscious it dredged that song up from in the first place is an open question)
And it really doesn't hurt that the lines Once you picked her up on your antenna/ You'd never be free of her spell sound very much like something Leonard Cohen could have written.
