Interesting. That's cool that you were able to use your contacts to get some publicity for your friend who had been threatened by a corporation.

I used iResQ in the past as well, but had a much better experience with them. It was back when they were called something else, perhaps "MacResQ", I forget. Sent in a dead iPod. The hard drive had crashed and was now useless, as I had suspected, and they gave me the choice of paying for a new HD to be installed or just selling the iPod carcass to them for $30. I took the money, because my iPod was obsolete at the time anyway. Nothing but a smooth transaction from them.

Comments in the BoingBoing thread indicated that back when they were MacResQ, they were much more decent to their customers -- apparently the company got sold and renamed, and that was when things started to go downhill. Still, if general management now Gets that there are ways you just don't treat your customers and implements steps to make sure that bad decisions like what happened to Lindsay don't happen in the future, then I think the end result is a net win for everyone.

That's what I suspected as well: they changed ownership a while ago, and have gone rapidly downhill since then.

I read that the original owners now set up a competing business: http://techrestore.com/

That's who I'll probably use in the future, if needed.

For more general Mac-related repairs, I've also had good luck with The PowerBook Guy. His office is on Market Street in SF. Quick, friendly service, and they did a fine job replacing [livejournal.com profile] enochsmiles' MacBook LCD after I, uh, dropped another MacBook on it.

In the age of the internet, the light at the end of the tunnel may be the Cluetrain! :D

Go right ahead. The addendum is: When the Cluetrain comes, be sure you're not on the wrong set of tracks like iResQ was. ;)
