While visiting my parents, I had the opportunity to take apart a Swiffer WetJet mop, a $20 gadget (which seems to be sold on the "give away the razors, sell the blades" model) that has a really nice peristaltic pump/motor assembly in it and is very easy to take apart. I'm planning to build a robotic micropipettor out of mine (perhaps designing a Contraptor head for it); [livejournal.com profile] mycroftxxx wants to build a bar-bot.

Here's how to do it.

Hi there, read that you are pretty discriminate about who you add onto your friends list, so I wrote you a poem of python. If it is worthy, add me as a friend, if not, no offence taken (it isn't too great, since I just jotted it down at the spur of the moment) :D

THAT IS AWESOME. I didn't even follow the link, I just whacked my forehead and wondered exactly when it was I stopped thinking of products in terms of subassemblies.

For my part, I didn't even know the device existed -- they have the regular Swiffers in Belgium, but apparently the squirt-mop is only for sale in the States and the Netherlands. My sister was cleaning up after the dog tracked in some mud, and I was like OH HAI THATS A PUMP IN THAR, and my dad said, "The pad's coming apart, so you can take the whole thing apart if you want." I think my family has figured out that if something can be taken apart, I'll disassemble it.
