panic and moving

Four and a half years ago, I put everything I cared about in a Saturn and drove halfway across the country to start a new chapter in my life in Iowa.

Today, I have too much stuff to be able to do that, and this whole moving concept is driving me to shaking fits of frustration.

If anyone wants:
  • a queen-size pillow-top mattress and box spring
  • a black metal four-poster canopy bed frame, queen-sized, with canopy
  • a matching nightstand
  • a twin-sized daybed with cherry wood corner posts and black metal sides
  • a cushy blue recliner
  • a hat tree with a marble base
  • a couple of glass-topped metal end tables
  • a glass-topped wooden coffee table
  • a butcher-block table
  • a metal cabinet on wheels with a hole cut in the back so that it works as an entertainment centre
  • a couple of desks
  • a plastic deck table with four chairs and an umbrella
and you can figure out how to get them from Iowa City to wherever you are, you can have them.

At this point I'm ready to mail all my books to $sysadmin and do this the way I know how to.

Hrm...Iowa doesn't seem that far away from hell...er...Indianapolis...

Unfortunately, stashing the kids somewhere for the requisite time needed to get to Iowa and return is the kicker.

Having seen that bed frame, I'm deeply tempted.

How long is it until you move, and are there any floors me and my fiance could crash on for a night, were we to take our cargo van and head south?

If you can get here by the 19th, I can put you up, but you may have to fight Tom for the bed. :)

Oo, a fight! I'd be up for that!
I'll warn you - I have a bum arm, a bum thumb, and I scream like a little girl when I get pushed around too much. Ya tebya ne bous! Davai pabiomsa! (Poorly spelled Russian - I apologize)

Loard help us all with the moving. I seem to remember a couple of cross-country Saturn trips packed to the gills. I feel your pain though. When I moved from Houstojn to Atlanta I dumped most of the stuff stuff on D. I think we left anything too heavy to mess with lying forlornly on the side of the parking lot. Oh well. Seriously, consider a packing co. I know you're famillar with the army movers. This works pretty much the same and is not that expensive considering the value of the time you would have spent messing with packing and loading, not to mention the risk fo serious bodily injury. Those strapping tape dispensers are vicious little buggers.

Speaking of some of that stuff...I came across several paintings the other day when I was looking for books in storage, still looking as good as when they were done. Would you like them back?

[identity profile] maradydd.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the problem was that the movers wanted a really frightening amount of money to get my stuff across the country. Turns out, though, that if I give away a few things and mail the books, it comes down to something rather more reasonable.

Actually, the army has never moved me because I've been in the Reserve or the Guard the whole time I've been in and have thus never had to PCS. But I'm not afraid of tape dispensers; I learned to tame them when I was working at SGI.

Ooh, I'd love that hat tree. And getting it from Iowa City to... Iowa City wouldn't be hard. : )

[identity profile] maradydd.livejournal.com 2005-12-10 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's yours. I'll toss it in the car next time I head over to your place.

Yard sale! Make everything a nickel. :)

[identity profile] maradydd.livejournal.com 2005-12-10 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Good in principle; difficult in the foot of snow we have right now. On the other hand, we do have Goodwill.

[identity profile] briaer.livejournal.com 2005-12-10 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
weren't there initial plans to hire movers? is that the frustrating part?

[identity profile] maradydd.livejournal.com 2005-12-10 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the plan, but it's going to cost far more than I can afford.

[identity profile] evillemming.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, if you have anything left you want to get rid of that will fit into my Civic when I come down to IC to visit next weekend, I might just take it off your hands.

..however, I am intending to probably move across country soon too, so then I'll just have to get rid if it ;)

[identity profile] semanticdm05.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd be cool if you then gave it to someone else who was also moving soon. See how many hands it goes through before finally finding a good home/junkyard.

[identity profile] maradydd.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
*snif* I want my things to go to to someone who will love them and get lots of use out of them, not just send them to a junkyard...

[identity profile] evillemming.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Eventually they'll end up with someone who loves them...

Hell, almost every stick of furnature I own was gotten second-hand in a college town... who knows how many people have already fondled it.

[identity profile] songblaze.livejournal.com 2005-12-12 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
*sighs* See, if we were closer in distance, I'd /love/ to pick up a good lot of that stuff...

Darn it.

[identity profile] maradydd.livejournal.com 2005-12-14 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's talk once I've moved. I'm giving some things away here, but will move the rest; I could probably still be talked into giving away more once I land in CA.
